THE SPRING 2015 COMPETITION

WINNER

RYAN L. DAULTON
I am a senior in the Marquette Business school IT program and really started exploring apps only recently.

I've been teaching myself iOS app development for two years, and in my free time, I've successfully launched 7 mobile apps - 4 of which are currently live on the AppStore. I loved it so much, that I now contract my development to local companies, and even some startups in Silicon Valley and New York. Just by exploring this area of IT, I've gained so much knowledge and really have enjoyed solving some pretty cool problems along the way..
"Last year was my first time competing in any real app competition and it was a ton of fun. Combining the race to build something impressive with the pressure of competition really brought out the best of my abilities at the time, and I learned so much in so little time. It forced me to adapt my abilities to a different market segment and really pick up an eye for design. All in all, it was a challenge that ended very rewarding for me and my partner"    - Ryan L. 2nd Runner-Up - Alex Isken

"I’m a 5th year senior in the business school majoring in IT, finance, and accounting. Although I always had a great interest in coding and IT, my only IT experience prior to this was the Business Applications class and some light experience coding in C#. "
The competition was my first time creating an iOS application, so I really treated it as a learning experience. It was an uphill battle to balance our team’s ambitions with our realistic coding capabilities, but Prof. Addo’s guidance and scheduled hackathons helped us immensely. It was a very fun process to see the app to completion and ultimately discuss our ideas with a panel of IT professionals. Although it was difficult and time intensive, I enjoyed the competition and took away a lot of new skills as a result.

2nd Runner-Up: Jes Schoenrock

"
I started my undergraduate career in Computer Engineering and switched to IT sophomore year.  I received an internship October of 2013 at Accelogix, and have worked their since as a Technical Consultant Intern.  At my internship we work with SQL databases and data manipulation, as well as programming RF devices using java.  I am a senior at Marquette and plan on graduating December 2016."
The competition was a great learning experience for coding, time management, and business process.  I learned how to develop a mobile application using C# while using Xamarin studio which is great experience for any future coding development.  It was fun going over the business side of making the application and getting a feel for getting a new application started and finding a target market and data to back it up.

Finalist: Wenjun Fan

"I am senior IT /Accounting/International Business student and only took the INTE 2051 and INTE 3001 classes prior to participating in the Mobile App competition."
Before this competition, I never thought I could build something real since I had no IT background at that time. This competition really forced me to think and learn. I learned how to build a business model, how to make the app profitable, and how to make this app feasible, among others. Most importantly, I learned how to make apps and it was all for free!

After this competition, I feel like I can be an entrepreneur anytime I want to. It was kind of time consuming but it was always worth it. I felt so happy when I was able to debug the App successfully.

I believe this competition will help other students to get their dream comes true, so if anyone has a brilliant idea for a mobile app, join this competition, you will never regret it!
